Another Nail Biter in Tampa
NESN just reported that Matt Clement’s CAT scan was negative, and that he is “in good spirits.”
I have yet to see a replay.
With one out in the 3rd inning and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Carl Crawford hit a line drive that hit Clement in the head. MLB.com currently has a picture of him sprawled out on the mound, clutching his head, on the front page of their site.
He’s being kept in a local hospital for overnight observation, but it sounds like he’s going to be o.k. No repeat of Bryce Florie, thank God.
A run scored on the Crawford play. MLB.com’s Gameday webcast describes the play without a sense of irony: Carl Crawford singles on a line drive to left fielder Manny Ramirez. Alex Gonzalez scores. Joey Gathright to 2nd.
Emergency reliever Chad Bradford allowed those two inherited to runners to score later in the inning, when he gave up a grand slam to Aubrey Huff after giving up a single to Julio Lugo to load the bases.
Fast-forwarding. It’s 10:10, and Manny Delcarmen is making his major league debut on the mound for Boston.
The Sox have squandered a 5-0 lead in this one, as well as a 6-6 7th inning tie. It’s now 8-6 Tampa in the bottom of the 8th.
As if the Sox moundsmen haven’t been through enough tonight, Delcarmen just took a shot off his right hip that turned into a putout. Looks like he’s o.k. though; he was blowing a bubble as he walked off the mound.
When mentioning Tampa on this site, I usually preface it by adding some fitting moniker: the “woeful Devil Rays,” or the “inept Devil Rays.” However, they sure are giving the Sox fits in this series.
Besides that, they deserve credit for hitting an oasis of good baseball in their typical barren wasteland of a season. They are 8-3 since the All-Star break, all games against division opponents. They started the month losing 9 of the first 10 games.
Danys Baez is in to try and close Boston out.
Varitek just hit a shot to dead center to bring Boston within one. 8-7 with one out; Manny struck out swinging to lead things off in the inning.
Millar just singled to center, and Adam Stern has been sent out to pinch-run.
Olerud just lined a hard single to left center. 1st and 2nd now with one out.
End of first post: 10:26
Bill Mueller up now, and ahead in the count 2-0.
Wild stuff. Mueller lines a ball down the right field line, which scored Stern easily. Dale Sveum, public enemy #1 for some of the folks who frequent the Sox message boards, sent Olerud who was thrown out at the plate fairly easily.
Mueller ended up at third.
Geez, Baez is absolutely shot. He's now 3-0 on Graffanino.
But he comes back to strike him out. I can only imagine what some of the Internet chatters are saying about the move to send Olerud...
I'm not going anywhere right now. After not playing an extra-inning game in their first 98 contests, the Sox could be heading to their second one in a row.
Start of Update: 10:33
Jerry Remy just pointed out that Schilling looked like he hurt himself on his follow through. Veritek came out to talk to him, but nothing more than that.
He looks sharp tonight. Fastball looks crisp and he has good command.
Off course as soon as I write that, Julio Lugo rips a two-out single to center with two strikes on him. A four hit night for Lugo.
Goodness... Johnny Damon just made a spectacular catch against the wall in deep left-center. Saved the game for the Sox.
Onto extras...
Start of update: 10:43
As if that wasn't enough.
Damon just ripped Baez's first pitch of the 10th deep into the right field seats for a 9-8 lead. Unreal.
Base hit Renteria.
Baez has been absolutely brutal.
Now it’s just coming apart at the seams for the Rays. A tailor-made 4-6-3 DP turned into 1st and 2nd, everyone safe. A bad throw to second pulled Lugo off the bag, and Manny, who was in his typical leisurely jog, beat the throw anyway.
“I’ll tell ya, I’m glad I don’t have to recap this one,” said Jerry Remy. “I’ll be honest with you.”
Varitek lines a shot to the track in left-center. 10-8 Sox, and I think it’s safe to say this one is history. A wild last three or four innings in this one.
That’s it for me tonight.
Some good games around the majors tonight. The Astros continue to play great baseball, winning 2-1 on a walk-off home run by Lamb. Javy Lopez helped keep the Orioles in the mix with a big late-inning blast. The Braves beat the Nats 3-2 in 10 innings. The Mets still aren’t scoring runs in Colorado, and are losing right now 4-1 in the 6th. Just when you thought maybe they had turned a corner with their impressive week at home…
