A Friday night. The Yankees are getting hammered by the A's. More to the point, Randy Johnson was an absolute embarrassment tonight. Barking at the ump, continually looking into thte dugout for . . . what? . . . relief? an answer? a ticket out of town?
The Yankees are walking a thin line. They've been playing so well despite the adversity due to the injuries. Yet because of the look of the roster, and the shaky pitching staff, a couple losses will swing the pendulum of goodwill in the other direction. There will be panic, and fans calling for the organization to make a move, make a trade, to do something.
I can only hope they don't go the route of the 1980s, as Steve Goldman alluded to in his latest version of The Pinstriped Bible, making a decision that rekindles names like Willie McGee, Doug Drabek and Jay Buhner.
Meanwhile in Quebec, the New Haven County Cutters just had their best inning of the season, scoring 6 in the top of the 5th to take a 7-5 lead.
I haven't been to Yale Field yet this year, but plan to go this upcoming week as the Cutters return home to play Nashua.
The Sox are up 3-2 in the 8th.
Check that: Blalock just hit a game-tying single off Papelbon with two outs. Tie game.
